El Rancho Motel in the 70s — El Rancho Motel Sign - 1970

Humble Beginnings

The El Rancho Motel & Dineteria was built in 1959/1960 by Lucy and Emery Addington. Lucy was a spirited entrepreneur until her death shortly after the motel was completed in 1960. Emery ran the motel and leased the dineteria until it was sold to Velma and Wayne Roberts in 1966.

Lucy’s entrepreneurial spirit was alive and well with young Velma Roberts. Velma worked hard to keep the motel & café going along with the growth of the oil & gas industry.

Ownership Swap and Expansion

In the mid 1970s, the Roberts sold the motel to George & Carolyn Langan. They moved from Elkhart, but still owned and operated motels in other towns.

In 1980, the Robert’s repurchased the El Rancho motel & restaurant. Velma stayed busy expanding the motel lobby and living quarters. She also added the Parkview suites in 3 different phases

El Rancho Dineteria changes hands

Velma leased the restaurant to Jim & Janell Schultz, eventually selling it to them.

The end of an era

After many years in business, Velma and Wayne exited the motel business for the final time, selling it to Gary and Sharon LaRue.

Into the Future

Gary & Sharon operated the motel until 2023.

In June 2023, the Ben Loewen family and Isaak Loewen family purchased the motel and have begun the next chapter in the history of the El Rancho Motel.
